SKU: MOD-002
Restored by Hand in Tokyo, Japan.
This is not a refurbished iPod. It is a fully rebuilt instrument for people who still believe music deserves better.
At its heart is the Wolfson WM8758 DAC — the legendary chip Apple used only in the 5th and 5.5th generation iPod, prized by audiophiles for its warm, analog-like sound that no modern iPod or smartphone can reproduce. This is the last generation to carry it.
Specifications
The finish. The stainless steel back is polished by hand through my own mirror-finishing process, then Simichrome, and finally Cape Cod. The last polish is done only after you order — so when you open the box, it's at its most beautiful, and a faint, sweet scent of Cape Cod greets you as you lift the lid.
Rockbox, not iTunes. I tested iTunes for a long time, and I won't sell something that breaks months later. With Rockbox, you simply drag your music across — FLAC included, which the original firmware could never play. It just works, and it keeps working, so that what you buy stays yours for years.
What's in the box. Every unit ships with a protective clear case, a 30-pin cable, and a short headphone extension cable — ready to use from the moment you open the box. The case is clear for a reason: the mirror-polished back is the heart of my work, and I want you to keep it that way — protected, but always visible. (The extension cable is there so any pair of headphones plugs in easily, even with the case on.)
Headphones. Choose whatever you love — the iPod is ready for it. I run mine with the Shure SRH840, a studio headphone that is, to my ear, quietly underrated. The headphones themselves aren't included. But if you'd like a hand finding a pair: for buyers of my iPods, I'm glad to search out a good, well-kept Shure (SRH440 or above) on your behalf — at cost plus shipping, nothing more. Finding a set whose headband and cups haven't worn is a matter of a trained eye, and that, at least, is one thing I can promise you. We'll talk it over by email, with photos, until you have the right one (a small adapter for its larger plug comes with it). It may arrive a little later than your iPod — think of it as part of the care that comes with what you bought.
Every unit is disassembled, rebuilt, and polished by hand on my workbench in Tokyo. Each one is tested, numbered, and documented before it ships.
Built to last. Restored to be loved.
Worldwide shipping via FedEx, with tracking. Free shipping included.
A note on the battery. For safe international air transport, each unit ships with a low battery charge, as required by aviation regulations. Simply charge it fully when it arrives, and you're ready.
Warranty & Support
Each unit comes with a 6-month warranty covering functional defects under normal use (playback, battery, storage). For warranty service, please contact me first. Return shipping to Japan is the buyer's responsibility (you may use any carrier — FedEx, EMS, etc.). I will cover the repair and return shipping back to you. And beyond any warranty — feel free to email me anytime. You'll be talking to the person who built it.
Import duties: for U.S. orders, these are calculated and collected at checkout — nothing to pay on delivery. For all other countries, any import duties are the buyer's responsibility on delivery and depend on your country.
