Before the world knew Takeshi Kitano as the director of Hana-bi and Zatoichi, Japan knew him as "the President" of a wild Sunday-night TV show, Tensai Takeshi no Genki ga Deru TV!! (Nippon TV, 1985–1996).
One of the show's first big projects was to use the power of television to bring a fading shopping street back to life: Kumanomae, in Tokyo's Arakawa ward. On this bag, Takeshi stands in a suit wearing a candidate-style sash that reads あなたの町を救う, "I'll save your town."
In 1985, the show's first year, I went to Kumanomae myself and bought this bag there. Bags like this were made to be thrown away, and few survive today.
