It is a fully rebuilt instrument for people who still believe music deserves better.

At its heart is the Wolfson WM8758 DAC. The 5th and 5.5th generation iPods were the last full-size iPods ever to leave the factory with a Wolfson chip — prized by audiophiles for a warm, analog-like sound that later iPods and today’s smartphones don’t quite match.

Specifications

Storage: 512GB via a genuine iFlash-Quad adapter, imported directly from iFlash in the UK

Battery: 3000mAh, brand new, high capacity

DAC: Wolfson WM8758

Housing: brand-new front cover; original stainless steel back, hand-polished to a mirror finish

Model: iPod 5th generation (A1136)

Firmware: Rockbox — plays FLAC natively, drag-and-drop transfer, no iTunes required

The finish
The stainless steel back is polished by hand through my own mirror-finishing process, then Simichrome, and finally Cape Cod. The last polish is done only after you order — so when you open the box, it is at its most beautiful, and a faint, sweet scent of Cape Cod greets you as you lift the lid.

Rockbox, not iTunes
I tested iTunes for a long time, and I won’t sell something that breaks months later. With Rockbox, you simply drag your music across — FLAC included, which the original firmware could never play. It just works, and it keeps working, so what you buy stays yours for years.

What’s in the box
A protective clear case, a 30-pin cable, and a short headphone extension cable — ready to use the moment you open the box. The case is clear for a reason: the mirror-polished back is the heart of my work, and I want you to keep it protected but always visible. The extension cable lets any pair of headphones plug in easily, even with the case on.

Headphones
Choose whatever you love — the iPod is ready for it. I run mine with the Shure SRH840, a studio headphone that is, to my ear, quietly underrated. Headphones are not included, but for buyers of my iPods, I’m glad to search out a good, well-kept Shure (SRH440 or above) on your behalf — at cost plus shipping, nothing more. Finding a set whose headband and cups haven’t worn takes a trained eye, and that, at least, I can promise you. We’ll talk it over by email, with photos, until you have the right one (a small adapter for its larger plug comes with it). It may arrive a little after your iPod — think of it as part of the care that comes with what you bought.

Every unit is disassembled, rebuilt, and polished by hand on my workbench in Tokyo, then tested, numbered, and documented before it ships.

Shipping

Worldwide via FedEx with tracking. If the unit does need to come back, return shipping to Japan is the buyer’s responsibility (any carrier — FedEx, EMS, etc.); I cover the repair and the shipping back to you.

And beyond any warranty, feel free to email me anytime.
